Baggage Check

The Baggage of Worry

Paul instructs us in Philippians 4:6 to ”not be anxious about anything” and Solomon said in Proverbs 12:25 says, “Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down.” Since Scripture instructs us not to worry and indicates that worry is burdensome we can safely conclude that worry is always baggage. This week, as we conclude our study of baggage, we focus on the baggage of worry in an attempt to not only identify it, but also to check it. Sermon Handout…

The Baggage of Anger

Anger is a natural human emotion that one cannot prevent themselves from experiencing all the time. That is why Scripture does not condemn anger in and of itself. However, anger can become baggage when either the source of it or the handling of it contradicts the teachings of Scripture. This week, as we continue our study of baggage, we focus on the baggage of anger in an attempt to not only identify it, but also to check it. Sermon Handout…

The Baggage of Guilt

At some point in time, all of us have done something wrong that negatively affected our relationship with others as well as our relationship with God. And sometimes it can be very hard for us to forgive ourselves of these mistakes. When we fail to forgive ourselves, we tend to convert our guilt into baggage. This week, as we continue our study of baggage, we focus on the baggage of guilt in an attempt to not only identify it, but…

The Baggage of Hypocrisy

Hypocrisy is a term that originally referred to an actor. Over time, it became associated with anyone who wore a figurative mask or pretended to be something they were not. As Christians, we are instructed to “rid” ourselves of “hypocrisy” (1 Peter 2:1), which insinuates that it is baggage. In this lesson we will investigate what makes hypocrisy baggage, how we might be guilty of it, and what we can do to check it. Sermon Handout 1So put away all…

The Baggage of Despair

Sometimes life throws you a curveball, and, when it does, you may be left feeling discouraged, deflated, or even defeated. Such experiences can cause you to inherit the baggage of despair. This week, as we continue our study of baggage, we focus on despair because the resurrection is God’s ultimate remedy for any baggage that leaves you feeling hopeless. Sermon Handout 17 my soul is bereft of peace;     I have forgotten what happiness is; 18 so I say, “My endurance has perished;…

The Baggage of Bitterness

All of us get are wounded at some point in time, and sometimes those wounds take a long time to heal. When those wounds go untreated, they have the ability to become baggage. We call this the baggage of bitterness because bitterness is the feeling of resentment that can lead to grudges. This week, as we continue our study of baggage, we focus on the baggage of bitterness in an attempt to not only define it, but also check it.…

The Baggage of Addiction

One of the most difficult types of baggage to check is the baggage of addiction. Sometimes it goes unchecked because the church overlooks it, assuming that it won’t happen to Christians. Other times it goes unchecked because those struggling with it are afraid of how they’ll be treated by the church if they reveal it. Regardless of the reason, the baggage of addiction must be confronted, must be confessed, and must be corrected. Sermon Handout 21 So I find it to…

The Bible and Baggage

Before you board an airplane, you have to decide whether or not you will be checking any baggage. We have the option when we fly to keep our baggage or to let somebody else hand it. Spiritually speaking, we have the same options; however, the Bible clearly indicates that only one is in keeping with the will of God. As we begin this new series of lessons, we will do so by first examining what the Bible has to say…
