Prince of Peace
One of, if not the most popular passage of Scripture begins with the phrase “God so loved the world.” What do we learn about God’s love from John 3:16?
The Man Who Got to Walk Away
As Pilate stood before the Jewish people, he presented to them two prisoners. Jesus and Barabbas. We know what happens to Jesus, but what can we learn from Barabbas? The one who got to walk away…..
Big & Little Sinners
While Jesus reclines at Simon the Pharisee’s house (Luke 7:36ff), a woman of the city, apparently with a sinful reputation, approaches Him. Weeping, she falls to the ground at the feet of Jesus, and wets Jesus’s feet with her tears. Her hair then becomes a towel to wipe up the sob-filled mess. She finishes by anointing Jesus’s feet with an ointment she has brought. “As oft as I think over this event,” says Gregory the Great, “I am more disposed…
TURN THE OTHER CHEEK
Frequently, our immediate response to being wronged is to enforce the conflict resolution process Jesus provided in Matthew 18:15-17. This strategy is biblical and useful in many situations; however, it may not always be the right starting point for dealing with an offense. Matthew 18 is not the only place in the Bible where Jesus provided conflict resolution instructions. So, before we begin employing that process, we first need to consider whether or not the issue can be overlooked because…
What do I do with this?
We have all received gifts before that made us ask the question, “what do I do with this?” Whether it was an odd trinket, a hand-me down family item, or something you just didn’t need or want – these items can be difficult to figure out. For me, it was right before I moved off to college in the Summer of 2011. I was visiting some family I didn’t see too often and was gifted an item I was unsure…
Prince of Peace
Peace is not the easiest state to achieve. At times we find ourselves caught in stressful and even painful situations that rid us of hope, compassion, or maybe even faith, and the Bible indicates that one reason Jesus came to this earth was to provide peace. In Isaiah 9:6, we read, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,…
Forgiving One Another
“And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32). These inspired words of Paul come in the midst of a series of exhortations regarding how Christians should conduct themselves in this world. Having earlier spoken of the unity that Christians enjoy in the Lord (Ephesians 4:1-16), Paul opened this section on Christian behavior with the word, “therefore” (Ephesians 4:17) and he did so for the purpose of drawing a contrast…
TRAGIC REMINDERS
As most of you know, tragedy unfolded at the Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, TN last Sunday when a twenty-five year old man named Emanuel Samson arrived at the church building as worship service came to a close and began shooting at churchgoers, both inside and outside the building, killing one and injuring 7 others. In the wake of this event I have been reminded of some biblical truths. First, the Burnette Chapel shooting reminded me that we…
