Angry With God
1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. 2And he prayed to the LORD and said, “O LORD, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3Therefore now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for…
Turn Around
1Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey in breadth. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”5And…
Jonah’s Prayer
1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, 2saying, “I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me;out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.3For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me;all your waves and your billowspassed over me.4Then I said, ‘I am driven awayfrom your sight;yet I shall again lookupon your holy temple.’5The waters closed in over…
Eye of the Storm
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.5 Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his god. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 So the captain came…
Noing Instead of Going
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of…

Angry With God
Jonah 3 records how Jonah finally preached, Nineveh penitently responded, and God graciously relented. If the story ended there, it would be like a fairy tale with the perfect “happily ever after” conclusion. However, there is more to this story. Jonah 4 records Jonah’s frustration over Nineveh’s fate, causing us to ponder some questions. Why was Jonah angry, was Jonah’s anger appropriate, and what should we take away from God’s confrontation of Jonah’s anger? Sermon Handout 4 But it displeased Jonah…

After spending some time in the belly of a fish, Jonah finally heeded God’s call to go to Nineveh and preach. In the third chapter of Jonah, we discover not only Jonah’s message (3:4), but also Nineveh’s response to Jonah’s preaching (3:5-9) and God’s response to Nineveh’s repentance (3:10). This results in the greatest miracle in the entire book—the grace of a holy and righteous God on an unjust but penitent people. As a result, we look to Nineveh to…
Man On The Run
Sermon Handout Why do we fail to launch? Or, to ask it another way, why do we fail to initiate our God-given mission? One reason might be because we disagree with the assignment. Such appears to be the case with Jonah. Jonah is the notorious prophet who said, “No,” when God said, “Go.” But why did Jonah refuse to go? Today we will examine the motivations behind Jonah’s failure to launch in hopes that we won’t make the same mistake.…
