Pride: Four Questions
Last week, we entered into a study on the destructive nature of pride. We saw the dangers and the deceptive nature of this deadly sin, and there can be no mistake that pride is not a trait that a Christian should allow into his or her life. As a wise man once wrote, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Pro. 16:18). The Bible is literally FILLED with warnings concerning pride, arrogance, haughtiness, conceit, boasting, etc.,…
How Are You Tracking?
I began 2018 by purchasing a new fitness tracker. I now wear it on my wrist, everywhere I go. Fun fact: I have the wrist of a 12-year old girl. This amazing device keeps up with my heart rate, calories, and steps; it monitors my sleep patterns, tells me the weather, and it keeps up with how many questions my kids ask me while we’re in the minivan. Ok, that last one isn’t true, but it would be cool if…
Pride (In The Name Of…)?
Pride is a big problem. Although the Bible makes this truth abundantly clear, we often live with a significant amount of self-deception in this area of our lives. We notice pride instantly in someone else’s life, but we tend to either overlook it or blatantly justifyit in our own lives. When we allow pride into our lives, it is typically “in the name of” something else, such as “a healthy self confidence,” “standing up for myself,” or some form of a personal “identity” that we…
Rotten Tomatoes
I love movies. As a lover of movies, I have come to appreciate a website called “rottentomatoes.com.” This is a site that basically collects movie reviews from critics all over the country, determines whether each review is “positive” or “negative,” and then assigns each movie a certain percentage of “freshness” or “rottenness.” These ratings are typically posted at least a week before the movie comes out, which is helpful if you are “on the fence” about going to a certain…
U-Turn Encouraged
One of the most confusing decisions for a driver is whether or not it is legal to make a U-turn at any given intersection. In some situations, there will be a sign that clearly says, “No U-Turn;” or it will have the symbol for a U-turn with a Ghostbusters sign over it (which I understand because I saw the movie…in the theatre). In other situations, there will be a sign that says, “U-Turn Permitted,” which means that you can do a U-turn without having to worry…
Inform, Not Enforce?
First things first: I’m a rule-follower. This doesn’t mean that I ALWAYS follow the rules (just ask my Mom), but I’m a rule-follower by nature. I respect authority, obey rules/laws, and absolutely HATE to be “in trouble” with anyone. So, keep that in mind as you read this article… Several months ago, a man was dragged off of a plane and it was caught on video. The video was posted on social media and sparked a multi-faceted outrage across the country.…
Tootsie Rolls??
I joined a gym this past week. I have never attempted to work out at a gym by myself for any extended period of time, but I felt like it was time to get in better shape so that I can walk my girls down the aisle instead of being carried by them. I decided to join Planet Fitness, which is close to my house and fairly inexpensive. Although they don’t have any of the structured classes that I was looking for, they have…
THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL BLUES
Almost all of our teens have gone back to school at this point, and I think it would be safe to say that most of them are not especially happy about it. After all, why would anyone WANT to go back to early mornings, late night homework sessions, increased temptation, and a never-ending list of demands that is constantly placed on you by coaches, band directors, teachers, parents, and seemingly everyone else in the WORLD?? In the pages of Scripture,…
Remind Me Oh Lord of the Price that was Paid
They bound His hands, and they took Him captive. They beat Him, and they spat on Him. They slapped Him, and they plucked the hairs of His beard from His face. They put a crown of thorns on His head, and they whipped Him. They put a robe on His back and yelled, “Hail the King of the Jews.” They nailed Him to the cross, and they killed the Son of God. You know, a lot of times it’s easy for us to read Scripture and say to ourselves, “How could they do such a thing?” “How could they be so blind?” “Why did they not stop…
LOOPHOLE HUNTERS – Episode Two: Relationships (Part One)
In this series, we are taking a look at some of the ways in which we, as Christians, hunt for loopholes in God’s Word. “Loophole Hunting” is when we take a clearly communicated command from God – one that was intended to be taken into the depths of our hearts and to change our lives – and we find a “technicality.” This technicality, in our minds, gives us permission to either lessen the impact of the command or, in some…
PASSENGERS
“You busted his lip!” “Look at what you did to him!” “Good work guys, good work! Way to go!” “This is horrible.” “Yeah, the police grabbed him. He’s an older doctor. He wouldn’t get off the plane, so they forced him off.” These are direct quotes of some of the things that were said by other passengers as Dr. David Dao was literally dragged from his seat on an overbooked United Airlines flight this past Sunday. According to reports, Dr.…
LOOPHOLE HUNTERS – An Introduction
The show “House Hunters,” which premiered on HGTV in 1999, has produced over 1,700 episodes and spawned over a dozen “spinoff” shows in its 18-year run. Some of these recent spinoff shows include “House Hunters: RV Edition,” “Houseboat Hunters,” “Island Hunters,” and even “Tiny House Hunters.” Question: Does this mean that normal-sized people are looking for tiny houses, or are tiny people looking for normal-sized houses? Oh, who am I kidding; I would probably watch it either way. According to a recent statistic,…
